Why is a Cover Letter Important?
A cover letter is just as important as your resume, if not more. It will allow you to reach the employer on another level and give you a chance of marketing your skills for the job, before the resume does so and also showcasing your previous experience and other qualities.
What does it do?
A cover letter is your chance at telling the employer something about yourself that couldn’t be mentioned in the resume writing. It should not just summarize your resume, but instead answer some of the other questions the employer might have for you.
For example, you could tell him/her without even being asked why this job is attractive to you, or why you want to work for that company/employer.
Although your resume stays the same, you tailor make all of the cover letters for every employer according to their needs and other requirements. You can mention which of your skills in specific are best suited for this job, and how your qualities will benefit the company.
The cover letter is your first impression, and as we all know, first impressions are very important, and they will make or break you.
If your cover letter doesn’t catch the employers eye, they will not even bother reading your resume. Remember, you are not the only one applying for the position, so do your best at trying to set yourself apart from the competition.
Characteristics of good letters:
For this, you will need to do quite a bit of research into the company that you’re applying at, the position that you are applying for, and the employer or interviewer that will be conducting the interview.
In the letter, you must show that you have gone through the trouble of conducting thorough research and put in a lot of effort to learn about the company, before even going to the interview.
This will give the impression that you’re taking this very seriously and not applying just for the sake of it. It shows initiative and makes the employer think that, if this person is willing to put in so much effort just for the cover letter, just how well will he/she perform the job.
Through the use of certain keywords and phrases, you can further increase the attractiveness of your cover letter, and it must clearly and efficiently convey a few things.
For example, what you have to offer the organization, why you are a good fit and how your skills are best suited for this specific company, why you chose the said employer, and what have you learned about the business beforehand.
These are the characteristics of good cover letters, and your job application cover letter should be about one page long and be divvied into three or four paragraphs. The first paragraph should mention the reason for the letter and how you heard about the position while staying informal.
Covering letter for job application is a very complex process that cannot be perfected overnight, it is refined every time you apply for a job and changes accordingly.
